A business shark's road map to the future

”Digitalisation is an iceberg - don’t be Titanic”

Stefan Engeseth, speaker and author of several books including best-selling Sharkonomics, will claim the stage at BIMobject LIVe 2017 with a powerful message:

“Digitalisation is an iceberg. If the industry doesn’t adapt, it will sink like Titanic.”

Stefan Engeseth has a thing for sharks. When studying these powerful sea creatures, he noted that their behavior has kept them on top of the food chain all through evolution. Based on this, Engeseth has developed his own unique theoretical framework for business success. He calls it Sharkonomics, and it all boils down to this: think like a shark, act like a shark and attack like a shark.

– In nature, sharks have to move to survive. But in business, most market leaders don’t move because they are stuck in history. That’s why eventually they become shark food, he says.

Few industries are as old and conservative as the construction industry, but according to Stefan Engeseth, we’re facing a paradigm shift about to turn the whole industry on it’s head.

– I’m pretty sure that dramatic changes will occur just over the course of the six months to come, he says.

Stefan Engeseth predicts a future where everything about a construction project will be decided, long before any construction company is even involved. Instead, large IT companies will take over the initiative, planning and projecting. In fact, this digital transformation is not even in the future. On the contrary, it’s already well under way, with IT giants like IBM and Microsoft becoming increasingly involved in the processes.

– Construction companies of today really need to watch out, or tomorrow they will become obsolete or mere sub suppliers of large IT enterprises tomorrow, he says.

Engeseth sees a the future that will become increasingly about co-creation, and where the lines between buyer and seller becomes increasingly blurred.

– BIMobject is one of my favorite examples of the digital transformation that has already begun. BIMobject is like the Spotify of construction.

In his speech at BIMobject LIVe 2017, Stefan Engeseth will give hands-on advice to leaders of the construction industry, on how to maneuver the changes that lie ahead and turn the process of digitalization into a process of success - sharkonomics-style.
