    Copper silver ionization is a non-chemical supplemental water treatment technology regarded as the most clinically effective prevention and remediation solution for Legionella, the bacteria responsible for Legionnaires' disease (Legionellosis). During this treatment, ions are systematically introduced into the water using a byproduct-free method to rid plumbing infrastructure of Legionella bacteria and other waterborne pathogens.

    Copper silver ionization water treatment is the most effective technology for systemic disinfection of Legionella in potable water systems. In field evaluations, this technology has yielded the best results over a wide range of water conditions and temperatures, and is backed by more than 100 independent research studies. A copper silver ionization unit introduces disinfectant ions to travel throughout the plumbing infrastructure and attack Legionella living downstream, embedded in various parts of the plumbing distribution system. CSI does not require consumables that are unsafe for handling. The ions introduced into the water supply are safe for human consumption and will not cause damage to the plumbing environment.

    LiquiTech’s® system has undergone years of intense scrutiny and analysis in the U.S. and around the world. More than 100 independent research articles have verified that this process is the most clinically effective prevention and remediation solution for Legionella. It is currently recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as having satisfied efficacy requirements to be able to make claims about the killing of Legionella.

    All flow cell wetted parts are NSF standard 61-certified. The Department of Defense selected this process as a requirement for all new healthcare projects in its Unified Facilities Criteria. Abroad, the system is certified for the remediation of Legionella from drinking water by the Dutch Competent Authority CTGB. All components of the ionization chamber are KIWA-ETA-approved.

    How does it work? The ions produced by the LiquiTech ionization process are cationic, surface-active, and a potent biocide. The treatment action is attributable to the positively charged copper and silver ions forming electrostatic bonds with negatively charged sites on microorganism cell walls. These electrostatic bonds create stresses that lead to distorted cell wall permeability, disrupting the intake of life-sustaining nutrients, and ultimately leading to cell lysis. Bacteria are killed, rather than merely suppressed as is the case with alternative Legionella treatment methods. The accurate dose-rate control system maintains precise ion levels, providing residual protection and prevention of recontamination.

    Copper silver ionization has no harmful by-products, is eco-friendly, and safe. Copper silver water treatment is the safest and most eco-friendly solution to water protection. Comparatively, this method requires no chemicals, whereas hyperchlorination requires extensive dosage measurements. Hyperchlorination functions by injecting high doses of chlorine to disinfect a water system. However, research shows that approximately 70% of chlorine dioxide degrades in hot water. Therefore, you’d need to add a high concentration of 2 to 4 ppm of chlorine to sustain efficacy. Maintaining such high concentration is difficult and creates by-products which proven to be carcinogenic. During copper silver ionization, copper and silver are added into the water supply at doses of approximately 0.3-0.4 ppm, thereby preventing harmful by-products, carcinogenic risks, and negative health-related side effects.

    Copper silver ionization has no corrosive effects. Most chemical solutions are proven to be corrosive to your plumbing infrastructure in the long-term, causing pinhole leaks and other costly issues that require equipment replacements. Disinfection imposes a high voltage, which may damage the lids and pumps in a system. A common misconception about copper silver ionization is that the copper ions have corrosive effects. This is simply not the case as proven by industry data time and time again (add link to data). After 25 years of successful installations, this technology has not once caused any corrosion issues. In fact, it keeps the plumbing intact to ensure longevity in the life-span of your plumbing.

    SPEC Details:

    • The entire system, electronic control unit, flow cells and interconnecting wire are ETL (UL-979 Water Treatment Appliances; UL-508 Industrial Control Equipment; and UL-1081 Swimming Pool Pumps, Filters and Chlorinators), and CSA C22.2 (No.14 Industrial Control Equipment; No. 108 Liquid Pumps; and No. 68 Motor Operated Appliances) certified.
    • It shall conform to the European Union EMC Directive 89/336/EEC and Low Voltage Directive 72/23/EEC and bears the CE Mark. Certificates of compliance must be provided.
    • The Ionization system must be NSF Standards 61 approved. Certificates of compliance must be provided.
    • The copper silver ionization system must be US EPA registered from the EPA Office of Prevention, Pesticides and Toxic Substances, and is be recognized by the US EPA as having satisfied efficacy requirements for the control of Legionella. The system must also be registered with the state EPA for Legionella disinfection in drinking water, as required by law.
    • The system shall be capable of remote supervisory control via the internet. Remote functionality shall include real time display and automated alarm call out via email and cell phone, system diagnostics, system configuration, data logging, and the ability to perform all control function adjustments via the internet.
    • The system must be able to be configured, controlled and monitored from either the local control panel, or remotely (Building Management Systems) via 4-20 mA inputs and outputs.
    • The system shall be capable of true closed loop proportional control. Proportional control is defined as the ability to automatically, incrementally and instantaneously adjust the output of the copper and silver ions proportionate to flow rates (water consumption) measured by a flow meter. The system shall maintain a constant level of required copper/silver ions and prevent over or under ionization during high and low water consumption periods.
    • The flow meter shall be an ultrasonic, non-invasive, transit time flow meter.• For ease of maintenance and to minimize down time, the ionization chamber shall be supplied with quick-connect stainless steel clamps. It shall have a minimum working pressure of 150 PSI at 150°F.
    • The electronic control unit shall have a power supply capable of producing power as required to allow it to perform with a wide range of water conditions. It shall automatically adjust the output from 0 to 100 volts, to compensate for changes in water conductivity and ionization chamber electrode condition, thereby maintaining a consistent copper/silver ion level.
    • The front panel display shall be a 6-1/2” x 4”, easy to read, bright and reliable TFT (Thin-Film-Transistor) LED-backlit, color, liquid crystal display. Its wide viewing angle will allow for more controller mounting options. The TFT displays system status, i.e., output current, voltage and input copper level or gallons per minute flow. This display is also used when programming system functions such as alarms, current set point, internal clock, etc.
    • The system must have: 1) demonstrated efficaciousness; and, 2) anecdotal experiences in preventing Legionnaires’ disease in a minimum of 100 healthcare facilities.
    • The system must have been used in healthcare environments for a minimum of ten years.
    • The system shall be made in the USA.
    • Manufacturer shall provide optional service programs for the ongoing maintenance, monitoring and service support of the system.
