Metal roof, wall panels help connect new mixed-use complex to its industrial past
The Raleigh Iron Works project, located in North Carolina’s high-tech Research Triangle, successfully revitalized a former iron foundry district into a thriving mixed-use hub. Opened in 2023, the development’s design pays homage to its industrial past, making extensive use of architectural metal roof and wall panels.
The centerpiece of the development is a pair of historic foundry structures—the Bow Truss and Double Gable buildings—which were originally part of a Peden Steel facility. After being abandoned in the early 2010s, developers Grubb & Ellis partnered with designers from LS3P and S9 to transform the derelict site into a vibrant space with a mix of retail, restaurants, and offices, along with a new multi-family structure.
Metal plays a prominent role in the design, reflecting the site’s history as an iron and steel producer. Both buildings feature standing-seam metal roofs, and the Bowtruss Building also features PAC-CLAD architectural metal wall cladding from Petersen. Installers used 40,000 sq. ft. of Petersen’s Tite-Loc Plus roofing panels and 30,000 sq. ft. of M-36 Corrugated wall panels for the project.
